An urban area can never be a real "forest" in the strict sense of the term, but neither should it be anaemic or decorative in nature. It should be an extension of the forest cover integrated into the city, reinforcing the intra-urban green network.
This project illustrates the possibility of insisting on a certain degree of de-urbanisation or, in other words, urban greening that offers an alternative model to the continuous city of the 20th century. It is no longer possible to live without nature, without energy, or simply without the special atmosphere of a neighbourhood the special atmosphere that makes life enjoyable. The 21st century brings new and exciting nuances for community living. Architecture and urban planning, in their most advanced phase, must contribute to this spirit, offering a different way of urban life from that offered by more commercial urbanisation.
This district is above all an opportunity to inject into the city a fusion of modern and traditional urban uses. In seizing these opportunities, nothing is lost, and much is gained. It's not just a green neighbourhood, but fundamentally a place defined by the concept of sociability. It is a space where community relations and encounters are fostered, underpinning socially sustainable development. A neighbourhood with a sense of identity, inward-looking, yet complements the existing city as a whole, maintaining appropriate connections and fundamentally favouring local exchanges and uses. It's a quarter of an hour neighbourhood.
It is also a neighbourhood that respects all environmental parameters and, to this end, is committed to the circularity of its material cycles: in natural resources, water management, and awareness of energy as an asset to be conserved. The homes in this neighbourhood avoid urban monotony by being in direct contact with the forest: many of them have living spaces that open onto nature in light, airy buildings integrated into a predominantly green setting, forming part of an admirably coherent whole.
A diversified urban space on a human scale: The district is connected to the city by the Route d'Arlon, with an urban morphology that easily integrates it into the existing continuous fabric. It is therefore a mixed proposal, operating on a wide range of scales to solve different problems.
Route d'Arlon can be transformed into an urban boulevard, a slow, friendly space planted with trees, where you can meet your neighbours while strolling along the shops. A boulevard at the heart of a dual living space, both open and closed, at the start of a journey towards the urban forest.
A double space, rooted in the history of the site and the buildings preserved there, nurtured by youth. The urban forest extends through the interior of the district and is crisscrossed by a network of clearings, spaces that collect and store rainwater, while offering walkers an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside.
Part of the stands at the Josy Barthel stadium and the racetrack have been preserved as a tribute to the place, but also as markers of the district's identity renewal, encouraging new ways of living in a neighbourhood that is both calm and lively, encouraging walks and communal living, where everything is close at hand and marked by intense ecological diversity.
